About The Catholic Church By Non-Catholics 38. Shaved Heads of Nuns? Most religious orders of women do crop their hair or cut it short. They do this as symbolic of the life they are leading which is a life of self sacrifice for God and a renouncing the things of the world. A woman's hair is considered her crowning glory and is often a source of vanity. In order to avoid this vanity the nun covers her head and cuts her hair short.
